3D Scanning

Many new products are supplementary to existing systems, such as when implementing new sensor tech to enhance existing system capabilities and reliability - typically launched as a service (SAAS) rather than selling the sensor itself. In these situations, it’s a standard part of the workflow to determine how the new tech ties into what’s already there. Sometimes it’s as simple as mounting it nearby in an open space and plumbing a branched feed into the new sensor, however it’s more common that the sensor should fit into the system seamlessly. The ideal installation should look like it was an OEM device. In other words, it should look like the original manufacturer designed it.

To accomplish precise fit-up, I will measure and import the existing design into my CAD platform to design around. While calipers are the right tool for smaller items and tight tolerances, 3D scanning is far more efficient for larger and more complex geometries. It enables me to collect comprehensive data points that represent the contours and features of the original equipment. This results in accurate CAD models you can trust to fit the first try, saving valuable time in the product development process.

In other cases - which I hope you never have to deal with – the native cad files could be corrupted or lost, or a critical employee leaves the organization and takes their knowledge with them. It would be detrimental to start over again when you’ve already got a product in play, so accurately reproducing the model as intended by design is often the most efficient path. Here again, just as with fitting into existing equipment we measure and scan the existing parts, recreating the necessary CAD models from the scanned data. This enables you to regain momentum and continue your progress without significant delays.

Using a 3D scanner not only streamlines the reverse engineering process but facilitates design based on the actual conditions of existing equipment. Overall, incorporating scanning into my workflow equips startups with tailored solutions, particularly when navigating complex integrations. By leveraging this technology, I help you overcome challenges, ensuring projects progress smoothly and successfully in a competitive landscape.
